Vom letzten Wochenende gibt es viel zu berichten; es wird also etwas länger werden.
Am Samstag habe ich es endlich mal geschafft, nach Powai zu gehen. Kurz zur Erläuterung: Powai ist ein Vorort von Mumbai, und ca. 2 Kilometer außerhalb von Powai liegt das Marriot Hotel, in dem ich wohne. Bis dahin kannte ich von Powai nämlich nur den Weg, den wir auf dem Weg zum Büro und zurück immer nehmen, und den "Haiko"-Supermarkt, in dem ich immer einkaufe. Das ist zwar schon ganz schön viel, und die meisten der Sehenswürdigkeiten hat man damit auch schon erschlagen. Wobei - das stimmt nicht ganz, wie ich seit Samstag weiß. Powai ist eigentlich ganz nett, stellenweise wirkt es nur sehr künstlich, weil sehr viele neue Hochhäuser gebaut wurden, die alle recht ähnlich aussehen. D.h., man kann nicht von einer gewachsenen Architektur sprechen, sondern eher von einfallsloser Stadtplanung, um möglich schnell auf kleiner Fläche möglichst viel Wohnraum zu schaffen. Die Häuser wirken dabei von außen nicht wie sozialer Wohnungsbau, sondern ganz im Gegenteil wie Luxusappartments. Dennoch, sie wirken irgendwie leblos.
Auf dem Weg in die Stadt hat mich übrigens ein Jeep überholt (was nicht schwierig war, da ich ja als Fußgänger deutlich langsamer war), hielt dann vor mir und es stieg ein Mann aus, der auf mich zukam und mich wie folgt ansprach: "Do you want to join us for a fotoshooting?" Ich habe dann gefragt, um was für Photos es denn dabei geht (weil ich nicht irgendwann gewzungen sein will, sagen zu müssen: "ich war jung und brauchte das Geld!"), aber so ganz genau hat er es mir nicht verraten. Er meinte nur, dass noch andere "white people" im Auto wären, die auch mitmachen würden. Nach reiflicher Überlegung habe ich dann aber abgelehnt, weil ich mir tatsächlich Powai ansehen wollte. Er hat das dann auch akzeptiert, wenn auch seine Antwort ("Ah, you want to visit Powai") vielleicht etwas höhnisch klang. Na ja, sei's drum.
Nachmittags sagte dann einer meiner Kollegen, er hätte im Reiseführer gelesen, dass wohl recht häufig Bollywood-Filmproduktionen Ausländer ansprächen, die dann als Statisten durchs Bild laufen sollen. Wenn ich das gewußt hätte! Dann hätte Shar Ruk Khan (oder wie der sich schreibt) aber einpacken können! Ich hätte mich als "Whity Whitemann" ganz groß rausbringen lassen. Na ja, bemesse ich eben doch Betonfundamente - ist ja auch schön.
In Powai-Mitte angelangt, habe ich mich zuerst in der Shopping-Mall umgesehen. Es gibt Dutzende Geschäfte, in denen man so gut wie alle Artikel des täglichen Bedarfs kaufen kann. Das kann aber bei weitem nicht mit einer "echten" Mall mithalten: es gab nur mehr oder weniger einheimische Produkte (wenn man mal von den "Marken"-Klamotten absieht; bei 200 Rs.= 4 EUR für ein Lacoste-Hemd würde ich nicht nach einem Echtheitszertifikat fragen). Auch die Größe der Shops ist klein: im Schnitt geschätze 2m breit, und vielleicht 6m tief. Zusätzlich gibt es jede Menge Restaurants: von kleinen Snackbuden bis hin zu "richtigen". Einige Kollegen waren dort auch schon mal essen und waren recht zufrieden; ich werde das auch mal ausprobieren.
Ich wollte mir in Powai ein schickes Handy-Täschchen für den Gürtel kaufen und betrat aus diesem Anlaß ein Lederwarengeschäft. Ich bin auf dieses Geschäft u.a. auch deshalb aufmerksam geworden, weil mich der Inhaber aus geschätzten 10m Entfernung anbrüllte: "Sir, Sir, please come in!" Die Auswahl der Etuis erfolgte recht schnell (Leder, schlicht und schwarz, mit doppelter Sicherung), und dann ging es ans Bezahlen. Das gute Stück sollte 150 Rs. (=3 EUR) kosten, was an sich schon ein Witz ist. Da dieser Preis aber 'natürlich' noch zu hoch ist und Handeln ja auch irgendwie dazu gehört, habe ich ihm 100 Rs. angeboten. Der Verkäufer ging sofort auf diese Summe ein, was mich vermuten läßt, dass ich immer noch 50 Rs. zu viel bezahlt habe. Andererseits kann es aber auch deshalb gewesen sein, weil es noch recht früh am Tag war (ca. 11:00), und in meinem "Kulturschock Indien"-Buch geschrieben stand, dass das erste Geschäft des Tages - verbilligt abgeschlossen - Glück für den Rest des Tages bringen soll.
Derartig ermutigt, wollte ich in einem anderen Geschäft einen Gürtel erstehen. Meine Wahl fiel auf ein Exemplar für 350 Rs. - auch sehr günstig. Aber handeln gehört ja - s.o. Daher reagierte ich entsprechend entrüstet: "Was, für EINEN Gürtel? Nein, nein!" Meine angebotenen 250 Rs. kommentierte der Besitzer wie folgt: "350 Rs." Irgendwie hatte ich das Gefühl, wir hätten noch keinen echten Draht zueinander gefunden, daher habe ich dann mein Angebot auf 300 Rs. hochgeschraubt, was meinem Gegenüber nur ein "350" entlockte. Das war, glaub ich jetzt, gar kein Inder - der kann ja gar nicht handeln! Um mein Gesicht nicht zu verlieren, bin ich dann ohne den Gürtel gegangen. Ok, 1:0 für den Verkäufer.
Meine mitgebrachten Hemden müssen mal so langsam gewaschen werden, und da der Stückpreis für Waschen und Bügeln im Hotel bei ca. 100 Rs. liegt und damit teurer ist als in Dortmund, war ich auf der Suche nach einer "Laundry", die ich schließlich auch fand. Der Laden war zwar nur so groß wie unsere Küche in Dortmund (knappe 9 m2), dafür war aber noch eine Zwischendecke eingezogen. Im Obergeschoß wurde gebügelt, unten gewaschen. Die Maschinen sahen alle recht neu aus, was mich für die Qualität hoffen läßt.
Ich hatte zunächst erstmal nur drei Hemden mitgebracht, und dann auch nicht meine besten, um das Ganze zu testen. Ich gab die Hemden also ab, und bekam einen Zettel zurück, auf dem Stand: "3 Hemden". Meinen Hemden hingegen wurde nichts angeheftet, was mich rätseln läßt, wie die spätere Identifizierung ablaufen soll. Na ja, auf jeden Fall bekomme ich am nächsten Dienstag drei Hemden zurück. Ob es auch meine sein werden, werde ich dann in einem späteren Eintrag schreiben.
Diese Mall habe ich dann verlassen, um mich weiter umzusehen. Bislang war ich immer nur im HAIKO"-Supermarkt und noch nicht bei der Konkurrenz, im "D-Mart". Also, dann jetzt aber los. Und der kann locker mithalten: er ist viel größer als HAIKO, und bietet daneben auch noch Kleidung und kleinere Elektrogeräte feil. Für sage und schreibe 120 Rs. (=2,40 EUR) kaufte ich eine kombinierte Temperatur-Uhrzeit-Luftfeuchte-Anzeige für den Schreibtisch. Zuhause beim Auspacken fiel mir dann allerdings zur Begrüßung der Sekundenzeiger entgegen, eine Ecke des Gehäuses ist abgesplittert, und eine Batterie war auch nicht enthalten, so dass ich noch nicht weiß, ob die Uhr funktioniert. Temperatur- und Luftfeuchtemessung aber klappt!
Nachdem ich nun knappe drei Stunden in der Hitze herumgelaufen war, wollte ich wieder zum Hotel zurück, und dafür hatte ich auch noch eine Premiere vor mir: Riksha fahren! Ich hielt eine an, setzte mich hinein, und sagte dem Fahrer, dass ich zum Renaissance-Hotel wolle; die Reaktion war ein eher hilfloser Blick, d.h. das Hotel kannte er nicht. Ich habe auch noch andere Varianten der Hotelbezeichnung versucht ("Marriot", "Lakeside Chalets", "Hotel") aber am Blick des Fahrers änderte sich nichts. Direkt in der Nähe des Hotels ist eine große Fertigungsstätte von "Larsen Turbo", einem Maschinenlieferanten, doch auch die kannte der Fahrer nicht. Ich wollte ihm gerade sagen, dass er losfahren solle und ich würde ihm den Weg schon zeigen, da kam plötzlich ein Passant zur Riksha, der Englisch konnte und wissen wollte, was denn mein Ziel wäre. Ich sagte es ihm, in der Hoffnung, er werde dem Fahrer das übersetzen und ich würde dann doch noch mal ankommen, aber auf einmal saß der Passant neben mir in der Riksha, und wir fuhren dann beide in die gewünschte Richtung. Mr. Singh, wie er sich kurz darauf vorstellte, hatte offenbar ungefähr das gleiche Ziel. So haben wir die knapp 10 Minuten dauernde Fahrt plaudernd wie zwei alte Bekannte verbracht. An der letzten Ampel vor dem Hotel, die Rot war, verabschiedete er sich dann, stieg aus und ging seines Weges. Der Schnorrer! Bezahlt hat er nämlich nichts - das mußte ich dann machen. Aber die 18 Rs. = 36 Ct. konnte ich noch so gerade aufbringen.
Den Nachmittag verbrachte ich am Pool, wo ich mir abends noch eine Massage gönnte (Rücken, Schulter, Nacken und Kopf). Zum Abschluss war ich anschließend wieder in der Gym, auf einem Laufband mit Blick durch die großen Panoramafenster auf die Skyline von Powai.
Eigentlich wollte ich heute auch noch was über das Holi-Fest schreiben, aber es ist mittlerweile 22:00 Uhr, und ich bin von besagter Feierlichkeit noch etwas angeschlagen und entsprechend müde, d.h. ich werde das auf morgen verschieben.
